9 december The Eastern Partnership: an appraisal at the end of the Swedish Presidency
The Eastern Partnership, originally a Swedish-Polish initiative, was officially launched in May 2009 as a European Union policy framework to enhance relations with six countries in Eastern Europe and the southern Caucasus. During this autumn, the Swedish Presidency of the EU has been in charge of developing the partnership further. One challenging task in this endeavour is to uphold constructive relations with neighbours outside the partnership, particularly Russia, whose reactions to the EU’s Eastern initiative have been somewhat mixed.
At this seminar, two new studies on the Eastern Partnership will be presented and discussed. One is the report The Eastern Parnership: Time for an Eastern Policy of the EU? The report is part of the research project EU as a global actor. In addition, the outcomes of the recent EU-Russia summit, and of the Eastern Partnership meeting of 8 December, will be analysed.
