Representation, delegation and democracy

Timeframe: Completed
Project Manager: Göran von Sydow and Fredrik Langdal

The purpose of this project is to study the processes, structures and institutions rather than the formal constitutional aspects of the EU. By regarding the EU as a multi-level political system is that a number of similar research questions concerning the representative system can be addressed on several levels and that the interdependence between the various levels can be addressed.

At least three channels of representation between citizens and public decision-making will be considered. First, the electoral channel in which the main actors are political parties and the main mechanism of representation is elections. Second, the functional channel in which interest organisations and lobbyists are the main actors and the main mechanism is participation. Third, the territorial channel in which the main actors are local and regional authorities and states and the main mechanism
is how to exert influence.
