Ett europeiskt medborgarinitiativ - vad vinner medborgarna? (2013:12epa)
The right to launch a European citizens' initiative was introduced on 1 April 2012. It gives EU citizens the possibility to propose legislation on matters where the EU has competence to legislate, and a number of initiatives are today registered on the EU Commission´s special website.
This European Policy Analysis describes the evolution of the citizens´ initiative and the way it is designed to work. It also poses the question whether it will be perceived as a meaningful tool by the citizens. Not the least, since the Commission is not obliged to propose legislation as a result of an initiative.
